Words Against the Evil Won
On this first Sunday of Lent, Rev. Robert Brown led us through a rich study of the Temptation of Christ. What does it mean that Jesus was affirmed by the Father as "my son"? And might the devil have used that relationship in his temptations of Christ?
Robert Brown writes, "Luke’s Gospel narrative of the devil’s testing of Jesus in the wilderness contains powerful hyperlinks to other parts of Luke’s narrative and other parts of the Bible. These hyperlinks, such as Jesus quoting passages from Deuteronomy, form a kind of musical score to aid the hearer experience the narrative drama in its fullness. Nothing in this story is there by accident—not its placement after the baptismal anointing and commissioning, not the genealogy immediately preceding it, not the questions the devil employs, not the Scriptures Jesus quotes, or even the order of the temptations themselves. It’s all Spirit-inspired, sophisticated and artful storytelling that intends to transform the hearer who has ears to hear."
