Gold Calf and Covenant

With a mighty arm and an outstretched hand, the Lord led His people up out of Egypt and brought them to the Mountain of God. Then, as we read on this particular Sunday, while Moses was still on that mountain with God, those same people who had passed through the waters of the Red Sea made idols for themselves. And then, if that wasn't bad enough, they reveled in their own debauchery and proclaimed, "These are the gods that led us up out of Egypt!" Can you believe it?

And yet God stayed His hand-- He relented. Why?

Because His servant Moses reminded Him of His covenant promises. Moses reminded God that they were, indeed, His people-- and that He had led them thus far. And God, in His sovereignty, chose to relent and stayed with them throughout their long desert journey.
